Books 103: John Green

Right now I'm assuming I'm somewhere in Australia, but through the magic of scheduled posts I'm still here to bring you your weekly dose of books and poetry :)

Sooner or later I was going to have to write a post devoted to New York Times best-selling author John Green, so it might as well be now. First and foremost, John Green is 32-years-old, lives in Indianapolis with his wife and adorable son Henry, who was born on January 20th of this year. So far John has written An Abundance of Katherines, Looking For Alaska, and Paper Towns, all of which I really enjoyed.

If you're new to John Green books, I would suggest reading his first young adult novel, Looking For Alaska, first. The story follows sixteen-year-old Miles as he heads off to his first year at a boarding school in Alabama. Miles is tall, skinny, adept at memorizing famous last words, and is referred to at his new school as "Pudge". At Culver Creek Preparatory School, Pudge meets someone that will forever change his life: Alaska. The beautiful, curvy, funny, wry, and also incredibly insane Alaska. Alaska's moodiness has gotten her into trouble in the past, but Pudge doesn't care. He's in love with her. And the fact that she has a boyfriend doesn't frighten him off, either. With his roommate the Colonel as their leader, Pudge and his friends pull off some magnificent pranks, drink some truly terrible wine, and smoke more cigarettes than stars in the sky. But there's a reason this book is divided into a "before" and an "after" section. A reason that shakes up everything Pudge has come to love. Looking For Alaska is my favorite of his books, and definitely what made me fall in love with his writing.

In addition, John has also co-written two books: Let It Snow with Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle, and more recently Will Grayson, Will Grayson with David Levithan. John has also mentioned that he'll have a new book coming out sooner or later, which apparently has something to do with a trouble making boy and girl on a desert island, or something. Don't take my word for it, haha. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what tricks he has up his sleeves!

John and his younger brother also Hank have a YouTube channel called VlogBrothers. It began on January 1st, 2007, when they began communicating back and forth via vlogs for their project called Brotherhood 2.0. These days the VlogBrothers channel has almost 300,000 subscribers, and has spawned an entire community of Nerdfighters, who collectively make up Nerdfighteria. What is a Nerdfighter, you ask? Basically a Nerdfighter is made of awesome and fights to decrease World Suck levels. This video should clear up any questions that you may have.

To sum it all up, John Green is definitely one of my favorite authors. Not only are his books fantastic and his videos amazing, but he's just an all around awesome person. And as is the Nerdfighterian way, DFTBA!

  2. Are you paying more than $5 / pack of cigarettes? I buy high quality cigarettes over at Duty Free Depot and this saves me over 60% from cigs.
